Richard Abbottabout this book: Scenes from a Life starts far down the river Nile, just outside what is now called Luxor. We meet Makty-Rasut, a skilled scribe and tomb designer working for the elite of the region. He is comfortable in his life, but knows little about his childhood. We seem to be a world away from the hill country setting of In a Milk and Honeyed Land.
But Makty-Rasut is troubled by vivid dreams, and on the advice of a priest he sets off downstream to find out their meaning. This journey takes him, reluctantly at first, out of Egypt altogether in search of his origins.
The book weaves together past and present in a series of scenes, just as how he might paint them on the walls of a tomb, and we come to understand Makty even as he makes these discoveries for himself.
Journey with Makty down the Nile, retracing his steps back in time towards the beginning of his life, and decide if he made the right choice in the end.
