Christy Nicholasabout this book: This is a historical fantasy novel set in Ireland in 1846. At that time, Ireland was in the midst of a terrible hunger, often called the Great Famine. However, Valentia McDowell, traveling from her native Ohio to find her grandmother's long-lost family, had no idea what she was getting into.
Against the rich and varied landscape of Ireland, the story of the Great Hunger unfolds as a subplot to the adventures of Valentia and her companions, as she searches out not only her grandmother's family, but a lost heirloom. The brooch contains hidden powers, and allows Valentia to tap into hidden depths of her own character and soul.
I was inspired by both the tales of the millions of people who had to leave Ireland during this time, and decided to write an opposite tale - someone who had returned to the blighted land. As this is the first in a series of at least three books (already written), I wanted a title that would indicate time and generations. Legacy of Hunger was born from both.
I did a lot of research for this story, though I had thought I had already known much about the time. I was surprised to discover Quakers in Ireland, working hard to feed the hungry, and even a donation from the Choctaw, recently recovering from their own depredations.
