Gry Finsnesabout this book: Vanished in Berlin is from World War II, Oslo, Vienna and Berlin. I grew up in Norway after the war and heard and read about the heroes who helped liberate the country, but very little about what people went through during these five years. From my parents I had the description of the German invasion of Oslo and the rest of Norway, the confusion they all experienced and the daily problems of getting food for the family. But also that the Norwegians fought the Germans any way they could, in spite of having been great friends of Germany before the war started. There were stories here that hadn't been told before.
I did a lot of research to get it right and started writing this story of conflicting loyalties, showing how the main character Ellen gets squeezed into impossible situations and has to make terrible choices. Suddenly she finds herself a member of the Nazi party without believing a word of what they teach. She is a pianist who has studied in Vienna before the war and has met a dashing German violinist who comes with her to Norway before Hitler's invasion in 1940. But he doesn't want to fight on the German side against his new relatives and friends and has to hide. They flee from occupied Oslo but only to find themselves close to the real fighting.
I just wanted to show that war is difficult on both sides of the border and that loyalties are not always clear cut. If you like both countries, who do you fight for?
