Anna Belfrageabout this book: There's nothing easy about setting off across an ocean to start anew in a new place. But that is what you get if you set religious conscience before comfort, and so Matthew Graham and his time travelling wife, Alex, have ended up in Maryland, carving a new home out of virginal forest.
That in itself isn't exactly a walk in the park. But things become all the livelier when both Matthew and Alex run into people they had definitely not expected to meet ever again. And in Matthew's case, the man in question is a former enemy, making the reunion anything but sweet…
Just because Matthew has been transplanted from the granite backbone of his native Scotland to the softer and more fertile lands of Maryland, this doesn't mean he isn't as morally stubborn as ever. A nice trait, to be sure, as it means he will risk his neck to defend those more vulnerable than him, like the six Indian women he saves from their wanna-be abductors. Unfortunately, those abductors take a dim view of Matthew's meddling. To be quite honest, they hate his guts for it, and so begins a long and hateful relationship, with the four Burley brothers going out of their way to make Matthew's life a misery – or end it entirely.
It's not as if they need all this upheaval. Life in Maryland is exciting enough as it is, what with the Susquehannock Indians, the unrest between Colonists and Native Americans, and the enervating presence of a rather rabid minister. But hey, Alex and Matthew's life is predestined to be somewhat excessively exciting, as is proved (yet again) by this the fourth book in The Graham Saga!
