Jane V. Blanchardabout this book: As a nonfiction author, I love to explore unusual places and then write about them. In Hadrian's Wall Path: Walking into History, I hope to take you, my reader, along with me as I hike the 84-mile-long divide that once was ancient Rome's most northern frontier.
Starting in 122 A.D., it only took Emperor Hadrian's army seven years to build this monumental fortress that separated Roman Britain from Scotland. Back then, the Romans marched in full gear across England in about four days; it took me ten.
As I walked among the ruins and visited the museums and archaeological sites, history became alive for me. For the first time, the past was more than dates and events—it was about people, like you and I, with feelings, hopes, disappointments, and trying to make the best out of life. I just had to write about that.
In this second book in the "Woman on Her Way" series, I hope that you too will feel the presence of the ancient Romans and learn what Hadrian's Wall is all about—both then and now. I included over 130 photos and illustrations to help you visualize how majestic these remains are and how picturesque northern England is.
I selected Sycamore Gap for the cover picture to display the path's beauty and tranquility. I later learned that the iconic tree can be seen from the road and attracts a lot of visitors. I was lucky that day that there were no others around and could enjoy the view without distraction.
I hope to also entertain you with the local lore, the culture, and an American's perspective of life along Hadrian's Wall, now a World Heritage Site. Whether you enjoy armchair-adventures or are planning your next hike, I hope you will join me on this exciting journey.
There are two paperback versions of Hadrian's Wall Path: Walking into History. One is in black and white, the other is in full color, as is the ebook.
