Barry James Hickey about this book: The Five Pearls is about a dying ex-con with a terrible secret who moves to a small town and changes his identity to become a high school teacher for five angry teenagers bent on self-destruction. It's a book for adults and teenagers who can read. I got the idea teaching summer school one year, thinking I might have leukemia. I thought about how long it takes to make pearl, a thing of beauty hidden inside an ugly shell. I liked the reflections in a puddle of empty shoes, leaving something to the imagination. I originally wrote the story as a screenplay and thought it would adapt well as a novel. My first novel, it gave me great satisfaction to leave behind my previous life as an actor, singer and screenwriter to enter the hallowed arena of books where from start to finish, I tell my story without compromises. I am excited that libraries and teachers are using the book to promote teen and adult literacy in my hometown. We all have a journey, we all have something to say. I have been blessed with a gift as a wordsmith and philosopher with a traveled and trampled upon worldview.
