J.C. Hendee about this book: Karras is likely what a dwarf should not be in many ways, though he still clings to his notion that his family's honor makes him better than most others of his kind. He might even long to have been born a human instead, for their culture makes more sense to him. In an attempt to find a marriage of his own making, and escape one arranged by his parents for the sake of family honor, he sets his eye on a young female smith among his people who has less than no honor at all.
But when Skirra will have nothing personal to do with Karras, and repeatedly spurns him, it is too late to let go; Karras has already come to want her in other ways. With no hope of achieving any of his needs concerning her, he is at a loss... until help arrives in the worst of ways through the worst of his clan-kin.
Fiah'our knows a bit about honor, since as a warrior among his people, he has already become a "thanæ" or "honored one." But a warrior's notion of how to achieve victory in love might be a little harsh and baffling for a misguided young dwarf who doesn't care for his people's ways.
