Brian M. Haydenabout this book: Writing this book was my way of sharing my thoughts and feelings to my grand children. I had no idea if I would live or die, so sharing my experiences and emotions on paper ensured the memory of me for my youngest family members, who might otherwise not remember me should I not survive. Sharing the experience of living with end stage heart failure with the public was my way of shedding some light on a topic that is viewed as hopeless. I explain the process of getting a new heart in layman terms, while sharing my day to day life struggles. Living life in the shadow of death is not only hard for the patient, but the family dynamics it tested to the extreme.
My hope is that my grandchildren will one day read this book and understand what was happening with their grandfather. I wish to demystify the disease an the process of heart transplants to the general public. Let them get the message that they are not alone. Others are going through what they are experiencing. But, the story is full of hope. The book is real life drama. It does not get more real. The story shares laughs, tears, intense life and death situations, family and friends pulling together, love and HOPE! The lessons are clear. Never give up. If I can live through the ordeals that I faced, then surely they have a chance to live to.
