Karen Jungabout this book: Two men rob a bank and take hostages in the late 90s right under the public eye. Jenna, a 19-year-old girl, dies. The book is about David, a policeman, who spent 16 years in the shadow of this crime.
I was inspired by one question: What kind of thoughts and feelings would somebody have, who was involved in such an incident? I considered at all the characters and decided to give the policeman a voice.
This story is not about the police chasing criminals. It is about different levels of guilt and the conflicts it creates. People are not just one thing. They are not just good or bad. They don't just make either good or bad decisions. I was interested in showing that.
The title came to me before I had even written the story. I had this image of a video wall in my head, displaying scenes of the crime and a crowd watching as it happens.
I did quite a bit of research for the story. I read interviews with policemen, I read about bank robberies and hostage crises and used images from my own memory, i.e. reports and live images I have seen on TV over the years.
I like to tell stories that don't take an expected path. If I feel that the ending is too predictable I will think of a different way to get there or even change the ending. I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel with my stories, but I'm always trying to present the wheel in different colours.
