The Vampire's Mirror
Set in Transylvania in 1580, one hundred years after the death of Vlad Dracule, The Vampire's Mirror is a novella written in the grand old tradition of Bram Stoker's Dracula. This vampire is no hunky bad boy who drinks wine instead of blood. He is a sinister old monster who has been waiting for a victim, like poor Giselle in this story, to rouse him from his grave.
This story came to life the minute I thought of the title. I like the idea that the vampire cannot see his reflection in a mirror, but has charmed a mirror so that it can be used as a portal to lure victims. Vanity and love of shiny objects, make the protagonists: the love-obsessed Stefan and the gorgeous Lady Analise, susceptible to the mirror's dark spell. There is also a comb with long sharp teeth that works its own nefarious magic.
Artistic images and a couple of old films from the 1960s, Crypt of the Vampire and Black Sunday, that are full of Gothic atmosphere and otherworldly beings, inspired the language and mood of this story. It was very easy to write, flowing as if it were writing itself.
I love history, and old castles, and mysterious, ancient cultures. If you like real Gothic Literature as well as Gothic Romance, you may enjoy The Vampire's Mirror.
