Robert K. Swisher Jr.about this book: I started playing golf when I was sixteen years old. Being a writer since 1967 golf has been my main source of income. Yes I have lived the starving writer and decided to follow the advice of many writers before me - don't quit your day job. I have been the head Greens Superintendent at three golf courses and worked on several more. During this time I also gambled at the game - for shame - but truthfully golf in all reality is legal larceny. Who tells the truth about their handicap? all golfers I have ever met always made reference to a Golf God. I pondered this idea for a book while placing poetry, short stories, and twelve novels.
One day the idea for Conversations With the Golf God hit me in the head like a wayward T-shot. The humorous book is how golfers really think, not the dressed up image of golfers on TV. And yes, they are the real words and wisdom of the Golf God, who appeared to Shanks and dictated his story for all golfers to become enlightened - the Golf God wants golfers to play golf on Sunday. Besides wisdom from the Golf God there are also stories about real golfers - not touring pros with whom the Golf God has grown tired of - it's hard for people making three or four million dollars a year to find grace and the key to heaven. Enjoy the book, have a few laughs, and yes, even a few touches of sentimentality. The Golf God after a few too many drinks has a tendency to cry in his beer.
