Debbie Simpson about this book: Gluten free food is everywhere these days. For some, it's the latest fad diet. For those with celiac or non-celiac gluten sensitivity, however, gluten free is a medically required diet. It can be difficult for others to understand how strict this diet is. It's not uncommon for a person who cannot have gluten to have to bring their own food to events. Many with food allergies or food intolerances can easily feel left out. Food is, after all, usually a big part of social functions.
As someone who has been involved in celiac support and awareness for several years, and as an educator, I have wanted nothing more than for all kids to feel included and safe when it comes to food in the classroom and at family events. 'Adam's Gluten Free Surprise' (and the identical version for girls, 'Hailey's Gluten Free Surprise') is my solution. While it looks like a children's book, it was written with the adult in mind. The goal for this book is to increase gluten free understanding, from ingredients to cross contamination, and to increase empathy for the child who requires this strict diet, understanding the importance of pre-planning in order to include everyone. A children's book for adults.
