Betty Mermelstein about this book: Upstairs in my hallway are photographs of some of my ancestors. The earliest of these are separate pictures of my great grandparents from the mid-19th century. I know some things about them, but I always thought how wonderful it would be to have them visit me from the place of their afterlives, to fill me in on their earthly lives, and to view their personalities. A Spirited Inheritance: A Family Ghost Story is about Karen, a girl whose own ancestors materialize in front of her in the upstairs hallway one day. They have come to ask a favor of her, to find a valuable scarab they they misplaced in their house, which is the house that Karen's mother now owns. Karen takes some time getting used to them, and on her own (she doesn't get along very well with her mother and knows she won't believe her) goes on a quest to find the scarab. I wanted to write this story with a sense of humor, since I have had many humorous essays published in the past, so I have the ghosts get into several funny situations that Karen must deal with. She learns a lot about them and about her own mother along the way.
