Stevie Woodsabout this book: The fourth novella in my Other Worlds series, An Enigma, continues the story of Major Rafe Wheaton and Lieutenant Adam Deacon, who are now very much a couple.
During another mission on an unknown planet the team separate into pairs to investigate a fascinating abandoned city. Adam is particularly interested in what Rafe has termed the library, a building full of thin slivers of metal and what appear to be reading devices though nothing appears to be working now. Then Adam inadvertently operates an unknown device causing the floor to open beneath his feet. Rafe is also caught as he desperately tries to save his lover.
The two men find themselves trapped in a strange underground prison that is constantly changing. They can't see each other properly but are able to communicate. They become more desperate as time passes with no hope of escape or seemingly no chance of rescue, though they know the rest of their team will be searching for them. Their prison is becoming more and more deadly until they question if they will die together – but desperately alone.
Review from Brief Encounters:
• "I liked these scenes and the way the initial frantic scramble to discover why they are trapped makes way to a mellow acceptance that they could be trapped forever and the soul-search that comes from that."
