Book: Cane by Stevie Woods

Stevie Woodsabout this book: This was a difficult book to write, it was also exciting. I had to do a lot of research and though I thought I knew quite a lot about slavery, I found I only knew the tip of the iceberg.
Set in the years just prior to the Civil War, I wanted to write about a young man who found himself living a life he despised but felt trapped by the very institution into which he'd been born. When Pieter's father throws him out after finding out about Pieter's illicit relationship with one of his plantation's male slaves, Pieter gradually finds a way to live the kind of life he wanted, and in doing so finds love when he least expected it. Yet, with the increasing unrest in the country, will Pieter find himself once again fighting for what he believes is right?
• Review from Literary Nymphs: "Cane is a romance story with a potent reminder that the same mind-set displayed in this historical account still continues today. This is an outstanding saga that I enjoyed immensely."
• Review from Fallen Angels: "Stevie Woods delivers a powerful story wrapped within the history of slavery. Cane is a glimpse into a man's heart and soul, and we are privy to Piet's love, his hurt, his life."
