Andrew Ashlingabout this book: Two princes, half brothers, are sent by the king, their father, to the far north of the country. They're supposed to keep a barbarian tribe that threatens the border in check with a small army and under the guidance of an old general.
Problems abound. The princes are rivals and inexperienced. The forces they were given are far too small, and the general, meant to be a mentor, seems indifferent to their plight. There is not enough money to organize the defense of the border, and the population is apathetic.
Slowly they begin to realize that they were set up by their father. Maybe the king thinks that in a highly competitive, ruthless dynasty four sons are two too many.
While the princes are still trying to come to grips with the situation, the older one commits the unthinkable…
This is a dark story with warfare and cruel events. There are also explicit scenes of a sexual nature between men. Not for the faint of heart.
