Marie McGaha about this book: Forgiving those who hurt us can be the most difficult thing we ever do. In our hearts we believe someone who hurt us don't deserve forgiveness, they deserve our ire, hatred, and in some cases, we believe that person should die horrible deaths over and over again. I know the feeling. I was molested by not one uncle, but by two of them from the time I was three until I was eleven. I always said I hoped they died horrible deaths and then I was going to dance on their graves in a red dress and high heels. That's a reasonable response from a reasonable human being who had been hurt to the core. But the Bible tells us that if we don't forgive others, God will not forgive us. Wow, how can God, who knows what happened, say that? It's so not fair! But there is a good reason for us to forgive others for the harm they've caused us, and it has nothing to do with them.
Inside of us is a great big God-sized hole that when we try to get past our hurts, we shove full of everything besides God. We use alcohol, drugs, sex, or whatever else we can find to fill that hole and stop the hurting. And no matter what we do, it doesn't affect the ones who hurt us at all. It only hurts us more and more and gives that pain much more power than it deserves. When we finally decide to to let go of the pain and let God fill that hole, we learn that we become a better person. A person who is free to move on, a person who is free to live a better life, a person who can truly love, a person who can serve God fully. And when we forgive others, God readily forgives our sins. Because God can't forgive what we won't let go of, including unforgiveness.
