Cherry Radfordabout this book: FLAMENCO BABY is about platonic friends - a gay author and a girl musician - who enter the world of flamenco, fall in love with other people, but also discover more about their own very complex relationship.
The special friendship between film director Pedro Almodóvar and his actress and muse Penelope Cruz was one of the inspirations for the story.
I also wanted to write about the plight of single women approaching forty and fearing they will miss out on motherhood.
And obviously I was inspired by flamenco itself. I was intrigued by the idea that a woman could feel this music – these songs of the outcast – resonating with her own dejection. But, as in flamenco, there's also a place for humour in the story.
Research included taking an intensive course in Granada and weekly flamenco dance classes in England (which have continued and are essential to my wellbeing). Flamenco has changed my life, and I hope the novel may encourage others to discover it.
I'm delighted to have Sarah Bird (best-selling author of The Flamenco Academy) describe Flamenco Baby as "a lively tale, with all the emotion, darkness and humour of flamenco."
