Heather McLarenabout this book: For many, the Bahamas induce images of love and romance--walking hand in hand along white sand beaches and frolicking in clear blue waves. But the islands harbor a dark secret. A cold war raging between the mers and sea demons for thousands of years is destined to erupt, hurling innocents into a bloody battle.
Two souls caught in the carnage, Faren Sands, a young mer looking for love in all the wrong places, and David Cooley, a clueless tourist visiting the island of Bimini, never should have met. Despite her government's strict laws forbidding human contact, Faren and David fall hopelessly in love following a brief encounter.
In the wake of an attack that could have left them dead, Faren and David struggle to outrun sea demons while keeping their relationship a secret. But an unexpected enemy is watching their every move, waiting in the wings to betray them the first chance they get.
Once their forbidden relationship surfaces, the couple flees Atlantis's High Council to an island crawling with sea demons to escape persecution, but they cannot hide out for long. With an epic battle exploding around them, their future looks bleak, their unbreakable bond fragile for the first time.
Mythos proves fate to be a cruel temptress, leading lovers down winding paths only to tear them apart, and it soon becomes obvious that David and Faren may not live long enough to see their happy ending.
My inspiration took hold during creative writing class in tenth grade; my teacher had a monotone voice that seemed to drag on and on, and being fifteen, my mind wandered to my favorite mythological creature-mermaids. After day dreaming for a few months, the characters came to life in my mind as if they were standing right next to me, talking to me and going about lives of their own.
The research was endless. Since a big part of it takes place in the ocean, I had to find out currents, temperatures, wildlife, the effects of water pressure... and so on. I researched for Mythos six months out of the three years it took me to write it. (I guess I wasn't paying such great attention in creative class after all. I finally took a crash coarse in English Lit as I was writing it for the umpteenth time.)
I wrote Mythos for many kinds of readers in mind. An important character, Cindel, stands out as a brave underdog to most, but to me, she is textbook for what people who are differently abled can acheive in life. I modeled her after my handicapped daughter (though not as severe a disability) and let her go. She really shines in Mythos, hopefully making others see that everyone has the potential for greatness.
