C. M. Barrettabout this book: When I was eight years old, I read The Abandoned by Paul Gallico, the story of a little boy who turned into a cat. I wanted to be that child, and I never abandoned that dream.
My way of fulfilling it was to write Big Dragons Don't Cry and the following books in the series, A Dragon's Guide to Destiny. In creating one of the main characters, Tara, I come as close as I can to walking in a cat's pawsteps. (I also get to be a dragon and two unusual humans.)
Reading activated my imagination, and writing fulfills it. My dreams are bigger now. I believe the primary purpose of fiction should always be to entertain. Yet, I also want to share my visions of a world where humans and other animals can live together in peace and plenty, where special gifts are appreciated, and all people have the chance to develop their talents.
My fondest vision is of a world where children and cats walk proud and free.
