Michele McGrathabout this book: Gigi's Guardian is a ghost story with a difference, more chick-lit than frightening.
The heroine, Ariane, starts by dying at the beginning of the book and goes to a very different sort of Heaven, one with shopping malls, cafes, chocolates and good wine. When she discovers her former lover, Michael, in bed with her best friend, she flees back to earth to become Guardian to Gigi, a young girl living in Swinging Sixties London. (The term Guardian Angel is no longer politically correct because most Guardians are not angels, far from it!)
Gigi leads Ariane a merry dance through the capital. They go to parties, an anti-Vietnam War demonstration, nightclubs and other events. Ariane is helped and hindered by a madcap cast of characters including the spirit of Sir Francis Drake who can't keep his hands off the ladies and a prim and proper Victorian lady who likes to climb trees.
The book is light hearted and funny but it touches on very real issues such as racial prejudice and illegitimacy. Will Ariane complete her allotted task and make sure Gigi marries the right man? Along the way, will she forget about Michael and allow herself to love again?
• "An intriguing and well-written story that makes the reader think about that most elusive of life-companions: destiny. I look forward to more novels by this writer."
• "Heaven is described in such a new and novel way, and the swinging sixties is depicted in full techno-colour! I thoroughly enjoyed this story and look forward to Ariane's next adventure."
