Jess Hainesabout this book: With the help of a handsome, mysterious stranger, illusionist Kimberly seeks a dragon to tame so she can graduate Blackhollow Academy School for Magic and claw her way out of poverty.
This book holds a special place in my heart. I actually wrote it some time ago, but the process of getting it published went on the back burner as I moved across the country, then moved a few more times, then followed that up with a sprinkling of family crises that kept me either too busy or too drained to focus on my publishing career.
It feels good to be writing again. While I'm used to writing adult-oriented urban fantasy, Smoke and Mirrors is a deviation from my usual. This book is aimed at mature young adult readers (ages 16+) who enjoy contemporary fantasy with romantic elements. I like to think of it as Harry Potter meets How to Marry a Millionaire!
I had so much fun writing this one, and there's something deeply satisfying about seeing your hero overcome any obstacles in her path to grasp that elusive shot at success. The story may be a fantasy, but I like to think that there is a lot to relate to here—poverty, bigotry, being stuck in a crappy job, moral dilemmas, reaching the point of being ready to leave the nest, and coming to realize that what you thought you wanted might not really be what's right for you, to name a few. All set to a background of magic and intrigue right under our noses in an alternate, present-day New York City.
I hope you'll consider giving this book a chance, and that you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed putting the story to the page. Give me a shout and get in touch if you'd like to talk about it. I always love hearing from my fans.
