D.M. Cainabout this book: This book is the children's version of The Shield of Soren - an installment of the adult fantasy series I am currently writing. As it is written from the point of view of a 10-year-old boy within the Children of Light, I decided to adapt a separate version which would be suitable for middle-grade children.
I'm a primary school teacher and I used the book with my class, reading it to them and doing plenty of activities based around the story. The children loved it and at the end they offered suggestions on how to improve it.
So the finished version was tailored specifically to the requirements of a class of thirty ten-year-olds! It was invaluable experience to be able to speak to my target audience so thoroughly and I feel it has improved the book ten-fold.
So, what's different from the adult version?
Well, aside from the language being simpler and the violence toned down, the story is complete within this book. In the adults' version, the book links to the wider series and therefore there is a greater number of characters and events which tie in to the series. These were unnecessary for the children's version as I only intend to adapt this book for children, and none of the others.
The other main difference is that, in the children's version, the main character, Soren, has a pet fox called Dash who follows him everywhere and helps get him out of (and occasionally into!) trouble. From reading many children's books, I learned that children love to have a cute character they can adore, so Dash was added. He isn't in the adult version at all.
The adult version of The Shield of Soren is not yet available for sale, and is still undergoing editing. It will be released later in 2016.
