Chris Edmonds about this book: As a child growing up in a small English village, my parents sometimes made me go to the local historic, Norman church. These infrequent visits had little to do with religion; it was more about social niceties than faith. I didn’t mind going that much; the convoluted rites of the Church of England captured my interests in some childish way. But where did all those props come from and who made up all those complicated rituals that were always part of the service? Who told the vicar he had to swing the thurible around like that and stink the place out with that foul-smelling incense? Maybe more importantly, was it all even really necessary? Why couldn’t people talk to the god of their choosing while sitting on a branch in their favorite oak tree with the songs of the birds in their ears? I asked my father, who had little knowledge and even less interest in such things, what he thought. “Tradition I suppose,” was all he said. Not much of an answer I know, but one that eventually gave rise to the young adult novel, ‘The Panynes of Heritage.’
