Shirley G. Martinabout this book: Ladies, imagine that you're the most beautiful woman in your town. All the men adore you. And you men, imagine that your girl is so gorgeous all the other men are envious. Ladies, imagine again that you're a witch who practices black magic and you're jealous of this lovely woman. What would you do? You'd do what any self-respecting sorceress would do. You'd place a curse on this lovely woman, Alana, and turn her into an ugly hag. Soon, Alana's face breaks out in purple splotches.
This evil witch is so powerful that she can cause a fatal epidemic to spread among the villagers. Then the lies and accusations start. Surely the culprit is Alana, the villagers are led to believe. Anyone so ugly must surely be evil. The villagers chase Alana from her home. She finds refuge in the forest, where an isolated cottage sits among the trees. She makes her home there and tries to make the best of a bad situation, vowing that some day she will prove her innocence.
Colin is a soldier, demoted and badly wounded in battle. His horse was killed in battle, so he must walk miles to his home. Along the way, he discovers the cottage where Alana lives. Despite her ugliness, he finds himself drawn to her, admiring her spunk while she takes care of him and helps him recover. After he is well again, he returns home, missing Alana, regretting that he didn't express his love. But when he returns to the forest, he finds both Alana and the cottage gone. But how can he find her again?
As with my other fantasy stories, I let my imagination run free. This book practically wrote itself and was fun to write.
