Aderyn Woodabout this book: "It is urgent that you reach the Borderlands. There, you will learn everything you need to know."
Life is lonely for sixteen-year-old Dale. She used to have friends as a child – sprites, fairies and dragonlings, but her mother banished them with visits to her psychologist friends, and now they exist in Dale's sketches and paintings. At school, the Plastics still call her names, while at home her mother considers her a constant disappointment. A new boy at school, Rhys, seems to take an interest in her, but she soon learns that he can't be trusted when she falls victim to a cruel prank. With Old Man Gareth, her only friend in the world, Dale has someone to confide in and ... escape with. As the summer break approaches, Dale plans a sailing trip with Gareth on the little boat they call 'Joy'. The journey will take her away from the bullies and her family. But, when tragedy strikes, and she loses her only friend, Dale is exposed to an enemy she never knew existed, and it seems the friends from her childhood may not be mere figments of her childhood imagination after all. A mysterious place called the Borderlands calls to her. Dale sets out on her little boat to find the Borderlands, and escape the enemy who now pursues her, but her journey is beset with danger.
• "This was such an interesting adventure to follow. Dale has some challenges to face and I can't wait to find out what happens in the next book. Great coming of age story." — SB Morales
