Roger Penfoundabout this book: Devious Affairs is a rich and deeply engaging family saga which draws readers into the complex twists and turns of a classic novel.
Emma Fulton is a woman bent on retribution. When she returns from America in 1954, she is destitute and alone. She had set out in 1946 with such hope to join her black American 'GI' fiancée, and enjoy with him the fruits of a new era of racial harmony, only to find herself vilified and despised as a white woman married to a black man. After the death of her husband in a gangland brawl, she returns to England clutching a faded note from her dying half-sister who begs her to contact her husband and handicapped son should she ever return to Britain.
On a wet and cold Autumn night, she arrives unannounced at the home of the bereaved husband and child believing that this family owes her a future that was denied to her in the past. Bearing a striking resemblance to her half-sister, she is slowly absorbed into their lives as both wife and mother. Soon twins are born and she finds herself enjoying the fruits of a privileged life.
In 1960, tragedy strikes when her new husband dies of a heart attack. Emma is thrust into the front line of running the family construction business which is tendering for contracts in war ravaged London. The business is beset by power struggles, corruption and strikes. In a testosterone fuelled male environment, Emma's survival instincts are tested to the full as she fights for control. When a building union calls for strike action she forms a strategic alliance with a local gangland boss and begins an affair with him which sets her at odds with her family and colleagues.
Meanwhile, Michael, her adopted son, is recovering from a long series of operations which enable him finally to walk. Knowing that he is destined ultimately to run the company, he begins to challenge Emma's ethics and values as she continues to build a power base amongst the rich and influential. The battle between stepmother and stepson provides a climactic ending to this epic novel - a riveting story of passion, greed and power at the highest levels set against a backdrop of London in the 'swinging' 60's.
• "Having read and thoroughly enjoyed The guest who stayed I eagerly awaited Devious Affairs and was not disappointed. I struggled to put this book down, a really good read." — AMAZON REVIEW
• "I loved this book. The characters are flawed but highly believable. The story is rooted in the mid-sixties and is highly evocative of that time. The story contains passion and pathos with fast moving action. One of the best reads in a long time." — AMAZON REVIEW.
