John Needhamabout this book: Julie Hawkins from Sligo, Ireland, has a dark, shameful secret, one that she's carefully buried and forgotten about during her eleven-year marriage to her Liverpool policeman husband, solid, reliable Derek.
She also has a schoolgirl daughter who kicks over the traces and finds herself pregnant. Julie deals with that unwelcome situation and all seems well. But then her secret is revealed and the past comes back to haunt. She sets off on a journey of atonement and the forgiveness of people wronged. Will she be able to find redemption though?
Secret Shame is my fourth novel and a companion to my previous The One of Us, although it's neither a sequel nor a prequel, so neither of the books are spoilers for the other and can be read in either order. Both are tales of heartache, empathy, tolerance and compassion, and of changing social mores over forty years. Both address social issues that impact the human condition. And like its stablemate, Secret Shame involves and carries the reader along to an exquisitely moving conclusion that will gently squeeze their heart.
