Book: Possessing Sara by Hazel Hart

Hazel Hartabout this book: My third novel, POSSESSING SARA, is set in the imaginary town of Elm Grove, Kansas, which was the setting I used in my first novel, THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS. There are a few character holdovers from my first novel, including George Lawson, a construction contractor, who has become the minister/spiritual leader of the Church of Light. His son, Junior Lawson, was a baby in my first novel. Now thirty-two, Junior is the youth minister of the church. His aspirations are to begin a television and Internet ministry and to convince Sara Kramer to marry him.
Sara Kramer wants nothing to do with Junior Lawson or his church—the church her grandparents raised her in. Sara's parents worked for a travelling carnival. When Sara was thirteen, her mother committed suicide. She partially blames the church and its teachings for her mother's death. She puts the rest of the blame on her father, who abandoned Sara on her grandparents' doorstep rather than raise his teenage daughter alone. Since her grandparents' deaths, Sara has been devoted to teaching her students English at Elm Grove High School and running a website exposing scams, particularly those aimed at senior citizens.
A possible scam aimed at her elderly neighbor, Ida Mae, triggers the action in the first scene. A psychic has come to town, claiming that his classes can help people heal themselves. Sara sets out to investigate the psychic, but her mission is complicated when she learns he is her childhood best friend from the carnival, Garth Drummond.
Garth had a childhood crush on Sara and has relocated his psychic business to Elm Grove in the hopes of rekindling their relationship. Even when she makes clear her belief that he is a fraud, he continues to pursue her, hoping to win her over.
Junior Lawson, seeing Sara and Garth together, is convinced that Sara has refused Junior's proposal because she is inhabited by a demon, and he vows to do whatever is necessary to exorcise the evil being and claim Sara as his bride.
Like all my novels, POSSESSING SARA is about family and faith. It explores why we believe what we do and how our beliefs shape our lives.
