about her book: I'm very proud of this book and the brave authors in it who allowed me to publish their very personal prizewinning essays. The contributors come from an annual essay I judge that looks for discussions of race, ethnicity, and a sense of place. Before it was even published it won a 2012 Skipping Stones Honor Award. I can't tell you how rewarding that was for me and the authors. These are powerful, honest, thoughtful voices—Native American, African American, Asian, European, Jewish, White—speaking daringly on topics not often discussed in the open. It's my hope that these essays will start a discussion, and there are extensive, in-depth questions at the back of the book for book clubs and instructors. Plus, we have a wonderful introduction by acclaimed writer David Mura. The book also debuted on Amazon as a Hot New Release, and NewPages featured it as a New and Noteworthy book for 2012. So I hope you will push yourself out of your comfort zone and give these essays a try.
