R.D. Power about this book: The idea for this book came about in late 2002. In September of that year, a small plane en route to London, Ontario developed engine problems over New Jersey and crashed. Killed in the crash were a former Canadian Football League player and his wife, a world-renowned orthopedic surgeon who worked at the University of Western Ontario; their children, five and eight-year-old sons, were pulled from the burning wreckage injured but alive. They went to live with relatives in Peterborough, Ontario. I remember thinking, "What a shame," for a moment and then got on with whatever I was doing. But the tragedy and my reaction to it kept recurring to me. That in itself was a curiosity: tragedies occur every day and I shake my head, feel sorry for the victims for a minute and never give it another thought. But this one was different somehow. I wondered how the children got on with their lives after the catastrophe. It wasn't so much a concern over the particular individuals, I'm sorry to say, but a fascination with the concept – what would happen to a child of great potential who suddenly loses everyone he loves and has no relatives to take him in? With no one to love him, no one to protect him, no one to guide him and no one to ease the pain, what would become of him?
Taylor Made Owens is the story of a boy, Bobby Owens, caught in this predicament. His family is killed in a plane crash, and he loses everything. He'd been blessed with looks, brilliance, humor and athletic talent, but is that enough to overcome facing the world alone?
The book explores the challenges he faces growing up. One special girl is the key to his salvation, but can she deal with the psychological baggage he carries?
