Juliette Banksabout this book: When thinking about a new subject for a book, I came across an article about a famous 20th century British artist, known for his nude paintings of women, among other subjects. He also had a reputation for being a ladies man. Here was the inspiration for my next erotic romance book, except I decided to place my story in the 19th century.
My main character, Theo, is the son of a Viscount who rejects his aristocratic family for the simple life of an artist, living in a village in the south of England around 1850. He is looking for a new muse for his painting, and is pleased when a pretty young woman calls at his house in search of work.
Lizzie is an unsophisticated country girl who has made a bad marriage to a tinker called Lionel, who abuses her and tries to make money from her. She, however, is made of sterner stuff and runs away to seek a new life. She is aware of the damage to her reputation that will come from posing nude for Theo, but is in desperate straits and accepts his offer of work.
The two soon discover a mutual attraction, which they try at first to avoid fulfilling. But it isn't long before they become lovers. Lizzie's husband hears about this and snatches her back one day when Theo is away. On his return Theo sets out to rescue Lizzie, but things go wrong and Lionel is killed. The pair escape to Italy to evade the Law.
Will the pair ever be able to return to England? And will the relationship between a rebellious and controversial former aristocrat, and a simple English girl survive such events? The story contains excitement and adventure as well as passion and some erotic content, and takes place in both England and Italy. A reader very kindly gave the following review: "Engrossing, exciting, and well written, with believable characters who feel an ever-increasing attraction. This is probably my favourite of Ms Banks' books."
