Anne Brookeabout this book: I've always wanted to be able to read minds - it must be such a great super-power to have! So when the voice of Simon, my mind-reading scribe, popped into my head quite a few years ago now, I found it impossible to resist writing his story. He certainly took me to some very strange places, and what started out as a simple story of a man rediscovering his purpose in life turned into a great physical journey involving four elemental kingdoms of earth, air, fire and water, as well as new friendships, lost love and betrayal.
Well, I've never liked things being easy, so I suppose I should have been prepared. Looking back on my own writing journey, I can see I've been heavily influenced by the wonderful work of Stephen Donaldson and his vast classical fantasy world, and Simon the Scribe owes some of his outsider and "wounded healer" status to Donaldson's leprosy sufferer hero, Thomas Covenant. Although, Simon of course has his own particular road to walk on.
The Gifting - and indeed the whole of the Gathandrian Trilogy, of which The Gifting is the first book - will most appeal to readers of epic and high fantasy stories. I've learnt a lot from writing it, including how to be real in an almost unknowable world, and how to be brave and take chances when circumstances call for it. I hope people enjoy reading this book as much as I've enjoyed writing it.
