Alexes Razevichabout this book: Khe is a true story. True in the sense that she came to me fully formed--red skinned, bald-headed with no ears, a complete personality. True in the sense that I knew how her story ended long before I knew what happened to get her there--the way it is when we first meet someone and know them in that moment, having yet to hear their history. Of course Khe is all made up. That's what writers do: make up stories. Lie. Tell you things that are obviously untrue and expect you, dear reader, to believe every word of it.
I wrote my first poem in the fourth grade. My teacher, the wonderful Mrs. Hoffman, told me it was good, and I should do more. For that day on, when someone asked me what I wanted to do when I grew up, I always said I wanted to be a writer. It took fifty years for Khe, my first published novel, to reach the printed and digital page.
Even that wouldn't have happened had Khe not been so insistent. First she insisted that her story be told, whispering her tale in my ear, yelling loudly when I was tired or not in the mood to write. Then she stood over my shoulder during the many, many rewrites, impatient for me to get the story down correctly. When that was done, she badgered me until I finally published it.
Even now she keeps at me, wanting the larger world to know what happened to her. So do me a favor, won't you? Pick up a copy of Khe and give it a read. Join her on her journey.
