Betty Mermelsteinabout this book: I taught school for 25 years with more than half of those being in elementary school. I wanted to share with others the reality of being such a big part of children's lives on a daily basis. It adds to the reality when my audience can see how subjects are actually taught, so I have brought many teaching methods and tools to the story, as well. A classroom definitely can be a setting for humorous situations, so my readers will hopefully be smiling many times throughout the book.
Beth is a second grade teacher who is dealing with these daily successes and challenges. As the year progresses, she finds it necessary to report a case of child abuse, which has dangerous repercussions for her. A previous love interest makes himself known by way of one of her students, and she must decide if it is worth carrying on with the relationship. These distractions never take away from her professionalism, though.
I think A School Year of Caring will appeal to anyone who teaches or who remembers what it was like to be in school, learning those important first skills and watching the behavior of the children around them. A teacher in love is always a bonus, especially when most of us never thought that ever happened when we were kids!
