D.A. Roachabout this book: One of my family members was diagnosed with a rare disorder last year. I have become an advocate for his health and in raising awareness and educating many in the medical field about this condition. It is often misdiagnosed until it is too late. This is what motivated me to write Rarity. I wanted to show the world some insight of what patients diagnosed with the disorder have to face. One reviewer stated "it's a fictional story, but it could be any of our stories with how true to life it is."
I also enjoy reading books about amazing and unconditional love. It's something I hope everyone in the world gets to experience. So my characters attempt to achieve that kind of love.
This was a book that grew out of stories of patients I have met. I weaved different elements of their lives to create one of the main characters. Because it was completely created from scratch, I got to experience writers block. It was like hitting a brick wall. The story was stuck and I had to rewrite a portion of it to get it unstuck ... very interesting to experience, though frightening at the time. I also wanted some very vivid characters that readers were drawn to and the reviews have been positive about accomplishing that.
The cover has a picture of my family member that has this rare disorder, along with a sketch I did of a bird. The female lead character draws in an art journal nightly so it's supposed to be a page from her journal.
I hope the readers enjoy the book, learn about a rare and frightening disorder, and fall in love with the characters.
