Book: Down and Out - A Young Adult Dystopian Adventure (The Undercity Series Book 1) by Kris Mogercategories: Book, Young Adult, Adventure, Post-Apocalyptic, Science Fiction, Family, Survival, Dystopian
Kris Mogerabout this book: Malls are lively places during the day with people rushing about collecting items of need and want. But at night when everyone is gone they are haunting and creepy. Mannequins stare at you from behind their glass prison. Displays and racks create shadowy nooks where anything can hide.
This is the setting that inspired Down and Out.
Walking through the halls after a long day of going through the motions of a dull retail job, I wondered what it would be like if modern society ended and a shopping mall was the only place left to live. What if everything else was buried in rubble and those people left alive firmly believed that to venture out into the open meant instant death?
Teddy's story begins here as he and his adopted family scrounge to survive. Under the rule of the Upperlords—those survivors who have taken control of most of the resources—Teddy and his siblings dig through the rubble for items they can sell or trade for food and other essentials. All the while, helping their father discover a way out, a place free from the tunnels of Undercity, the home of those deemed unworthy by the residents of Uppercity.
Down and Out is a unique dystopian adventure for young adults. The world is a place filled with danger, fears, suffering, hope, and love—a place where the strong use the weak and the only hope you have is in the love of those closest to you.
