Debra Shiveley Welchabout this book: In many ways, "Spirit Woman," the sequel to "Cedar Woman," is both an autobiography and a biography.
Taken from the true stories of four women, one of which is myself, "Spirit Woman" shines a glaring light on domestic abuse. Using my childhood as the base of the story, I tried to show how childhood abuse can lead a person into abuse later in adulthood. I've thrown up markers – given the reader road signs, in the hopes that someone will recognize them and save a soul from the torment that is domestic abuse.
This book was not easy to write, but I had to write it! All of the scenes are taken from true stories, and the writing of them left me drained. Uprooting my own experience often left me depressed, but I soon found that the writing became cathartic and I've come to realize that I have let loose of a lot of the angst I discovered that I still carried as a 60 plus-year-old woman.
There are some light moments in the book. There is a surprise hero in the story, and as with "Cedar Woman" there are Lakota Sioux words and beliefs contained within the story.
Read it to the end. My next book "Brave Heart Woman" will pick up where "Spirit Woman" ends.
