William Massaabout this book: I wrote Gargoyle Knight because I was drawn to the idea of a king sacrificing his own humanity to avenge his loved ones. It's a theme in many revenge stories: a good man is pushed to edge on his quest for revenge and in the process almost loses his humanity. I thought it would be cool to externalize this subtext and make it the text: the hero literally become a monster! In addition, gargoyles are cool and haven't been overdone in fiction - yet.
The story is meant to be a pulpy, dynamic and fun read and doesn't strive for the epic scope or complexity of some other fantasy works. My background is screenwriting so I still approach my work from a cinematic angle and try to see the movie version of the story in my head.
I play a little loose with the historical facts and might get in trouble for that but it is more stylized approach to the material.
The cover turned out better than I could imagine thanks to the genius of my designer and a little luck. I had licensed an amazing piece of art originally but ultimately felt it was too comic book. Once I decided to go another direction, I started looking at stock images and when I came across the stone gargoyle, the concept of the split face clicked. Genius designer Jun Ares decided to use a sword to divide the two halves which took the whole thing to another level. This will a hard cover to top!
