Keith Dixonabout this book: Sam Dyke is a private detective in the north of England. He struggles to make a living because there are certain kinds of cases that he won't take on. The latest seems like one of them.
This case takes him back into the past, to a problem he can't solve. But also into the future, into a relationship that he doesn't expect and might bring more problems than he needs. Sam finds that everything he thought he knew was wrong, and there are some secrets that come to light that he'd prefer to be hidden. He finds, though, that perhaps it's better to allow some reality into his life - otherwise he would spend all his time deluding himself.
Sam is persistent to the point of bloody-minded and listens to no-one but himself, even while he is trying to do the best for other people. In the end he's confronted with a cold-blooded killer, against whom his only defence is a pocket-knife ...
