Jo Lauerabout this book: As a child, my mother had a theory that you shouldn't get too attached to your plans because Life has a way of doing as it will. In Best Laid Plans, Shalese has a dream. Her dream is answered, but at what price do our dreams come true?
A quirky cast of characters living together in a San Francisco recovery house for female ex-felons and their three fearless leaders are faced with a discovery that the wealthy benefactress who funded the house is involved in something that could lead to someone's death. They relocate to the rolling vineyard hills of Santa Rosa, CA believing they've outrun bad luck, only to find fate knocking at their door.
I had the cover designed as a visual homage to "getting away with something," outsmarting and overriding "the plan." The pink tutu is actually a nod to a former lover. 'nuff said.
My writer's style is to wait for characters to introduce themselves to me, and then to figure out how to tell their stories. My first clue that this book was about to be made was while I was in the shower one morning--Jenny appeared in my head saying, "I hadn't meant to kill anyone that morning." Now there's a story I couldn't resist. Hope you can't resist it either.
