Anne Allenabout this book: I lived in Guernsey for fourteen happy years and left a son behind to ensure I keep returning. My books are centred on the island (near the French coast but part of GB) as a way of saying 'thank you' for the time I spent there and the friends I made. In fact I'm now referring to them as 'The Guernsey Novels' as there's a third brewing as we speak:)The story of Finding Mother starts in England and jets off to Spain and Jersey before landing - guess where - Guernsey!
Nicole discovers that her husband has been unfaithful – again – and realises that something has to change in her life. She's had a charmed life until then; a comfortable upbringing as the adopted daughter of an advocate and his wife in Jersey, followed by university and a successful career in radio and television. And the handsome, charming – and adulterous – husband, Tom. Although she's known since she was little that she was adopted, it had never really figured in her life until now. Perhaps it's time to find out who she really is and tracing her natural mother would help. So Nicole takes time away from her husband and her job and begins a journey that will bring her more than she bargained for. Long-buried secrets are unearthed and lives are irrevocably changed by Nicole's search for self-awareness and knowledge of her 'real' parents.
Themes of love and loss and buried secrets figure large in my books and Finding Mother also shares a reference with my first book,Dangerous Waters, to the Second World War. And of course, I include lots of descriptions of Guernsey and also, in this novel, Herm. I think it's the most perfect, idyllic little island and I spent a very contented week there last December researching and writing my book. Admittedly it was a bit cold and blowy at that time, but in the summer it's heavenly. As Nicole discovers for herself:)
Reviews:`Finding Mother' is another excellent book from Anne Allen - the second of her `Guernsey Novels'. Three generations of women are involved in this tale of mystery, sacrifice, loss and love and all the various strands are expertly drawn together at the end, leaving the reader with a definite `feel-good' factor.
• "A sensitive, heart-felt novel about family relationships, identity, adoption, second chances at love… With romance, weddings, boat trips, lovely gardens and more, Finding Mother is a dazzle of a book, a perfect holiday read." — Lindsay Townsend, author of The Snow Bride
