Sheila Claydonabout this book: Jodie Eriksson has all the cares of the world on her shoulders as she struggles to hold down her job as manager of a riding school and bring up her teenage sister Izzie while she fights the memories of her past.
Marcus Lewis is also fighting his own demons even while he writes sublime film music. His success is not enough though, and nor is his wealth. He'd give it all away tomorrow if only his eleven-year-old son, Luke, could be like other children.
What prompted me to write this story? Well, a few years ago I passed a derelict farmhouse every time I walked my dog down the local bridle path to the beach. It was a spooky site, overgrown with brambles and dark, forbidding pines that had been twisted out of shape by the wind. Then one day the builders moved in, cleared the woodland, demolished the old, broken down building and closed off the bridle path. In its place they built the sort of house only the very wealthy can aspire to. It has stables and an indoor pool and gym and is surrounded by acres of lawn and replanted trees. Nowadays it is hidden from the bridle path by a high laurel hedge but behind it there are often the sounds of children laughing, dogs barking and all the other happy noises that make up family life.
My real interest was first piqued when local horse riders launched a campaign to have the bridle path reopened. Then, serendipitously, I read an article about how horses can help children with disabilities and, intrigued, I visited the local branch of Riding for the Disabled. After that it was a shoo-in. I just had to write Mending Jodie's Heart.
There is still one lingering problem though. Whenever I pass the lovely redbrick building that has replaced the farmhouse, I expect to meet Marcus or Jodie, or even Izzie and Luke. I lived with them for so long that I've almost convinced myself they are real.
As for the cover, well when I first saw it on designer Michelle Lee's website I just knew it was Jodie. She was exactly the girl I pictured in my head. Marcus I have left to the reader's imagination!
If you would like to know what happens to Luke and Izzie as well as discover what married life brings for Jodie and Marcus, then you can find out in Finding Bella Blue (Book2) and Saving Katy Gray (Book 3).
