Sheila Claydonabout this book: Daniel Marchant wants to save the world - well the flora and fauna in his small part of it anyway. Unfortunately he has too many other responsibilities to properly concentrate on his fledgling eco company. He has to run the family's tourism business, pay college fees and medical bills, keep his brother on the straight and narrow, and try to prevent his father from driving his mother into a deep depression. No wonder he has no time for a private life.
Claire Harris is in a rut, so when she gets a chance to climb out of it she knows she must take it even though the thought of changing her life frightens her half to death. If she'd known that, along with a new job and a new country, she would also be taking on the whole of the Marchant family, then she might have turned down what Daniel was offering her even though it appeared to be the chance of a lifetime.
There is a trace of my own life in all of my books. Not what happens in them but where they are set, and this is particularly the case with 'Reluctant Date.'
Quite early on in the book the setting is the wild northwest coast of England, a place where I have lived for the past twenty years and which is so familiar to me that I have to make myself stop and look when I want to describe it. Then, as the story progresses and Claire moves to Florida, the setting becomes a small coastal town where everyone knows one another, and where the scenery and wildlife take over.
Why there? Well I once spent a wonderful holiday in just such a place. It was so idyllic that I don't think I could ever return just in case it turned out not to be as I remember it. So when you read about Claire meeting the inhabitants, driving a customized gold buggy to work, living in a house on stilts, taking a dinghy out into the bay to search for dolphins and take photographs of white pelicans, then know it really happened…well in my imagination anyway.
