Linda Swiftabout this book: While living in England I decided to write a story that had been growing in my mind since visiting St. Croix where my husband was working on another power plant consulting job. That assignment had been "single status" which meant that wives or family would not receive expenses to accompany them and workers were expected to share accommodations.
The island was beautiful and memories of the blue-green Caribbean and colorful villas seemed a perfect setting for a romance. Sitting in my small second floor study in our flat in Kingston-upon-Hull, I could see the muddy, turbulent River Humber which was a sharp contrast to the images in my mind. That cold English winter seemed a perfect time to write about warm sun, sand, and a tropical sea.
An image from another of my husband's jobs in Nevada hovered in my mind. One day while waiting to meet him, I saw a woman leave the work site wearing a hardhat and khakis, carrying a lunch box. I began to wonder what it would be like to be the only female on a power plant job normally reserved for males. So I took the woman from Nevada and put her in St. Croix and began constructing a plot. I gave the initials B.J. for a first name so she could easily be confused for a male "on company forms." Now all I needed was a male with a neutral name like Dana to add to the mix-up and the plot was off and running. But when I "ran" it by my agent, he said the plot wouldn't work; that no large company could allow anything like it to happen. Well, he was a good agent but he had no firsthand experience with large companies and I knew in my heart it could, so I continued writing the story which I called Single Status.
My next hurdle was my lack of knowledge of operations inside a steam plant. I knew what needed to happen in my story, so my longsuffering husband came home from a day in the plant and talked me through the technical details I needed to make that happen. I'm not a golfer either but being an avid golfer himself, he also talked me through a very competitive golf game.
Time passed, we returned to the US, and I decided to cancel my agent's contract and explore the digital publishing market. Single Status was one of my first three submissions to several publishers. And it was accepted and I had my first digital book contract in a matter of days. The editor wrote that she was marooned in her office in a snowstorm in Minnesota when she read this story and I feel sure the story's warm setting must have held great appeal for her. The book was first published as an ebook only, but now is available with another publisher in ebook and print. If you like a fast moving story, with strong male-female attraction and lots of humor, Single Status won't disappoint you.
