Sharon Nobleabout this book: Velvet and Topaz came to me as a first line, as is often the case. "It wasn't his eyes that Caroline noticed first, hidden beneath sleepy lids and accented with a slash of dark, sooty brows. No, it was the vivid impression of a hawk among peacocks that caught her attention the instant she entered the formal drawing room at Hampton Court Palace." After that it was all downhill, easy, and exciting. The story just flowed. The title comes from the fact that the hero was dressed in black velvet when Caroline first saw him, and his eyes are the color of topaz -- a very important element to the story. When I saw the photo, I knew immediately that this was the cover. Both models look exactly like Adam and Caroline, an uncommon occurrence for writers.
Every day I was so eager to get back to the computer and continue the story, I neglected housework (boring) and just worked on the book, so fast that I wrote it in a couple of months -- a rarity for me. The hardest part was the research. My daughter and I had taken a trip to England just the previous year so we could indulge our passion for all things Tudor, so I had lots of material except that I needed objective information about the regentrification projects that are modernizing the East End of London. So the only thing that held up the writing was online research.
As the writing progressed, I fell more and more in love with Adam. He's alpha male and beta male rolled into one handsome package, and he's remarkably patient with Caroline's hard-headed refusal to see both sides of an issue -- the core of their problem. I love this book. I've read it through about three times since its publication last year, and it's always a rewarding read, if I do say so myself.
I hope readers will enjoy Adam and Caroline's journey as much as I have.
