Kirby Wrightabout this book: I didn't know where to start when writing this book. But I knew I needed to write it. I wanted to write it for all the underdog kids in junior high and high school, the ones who are not athletes or brains or popular, the ones who exist under the radar and struggle trying to find their identities on school campuses every day across the USA. I was greatly influenced by CATCHER IN THE RYE because Holden Caulfield is an underdog too. But his story takes place during two weeks. Mine covers 13 years in the narrator's life.
Above all, I wanted to write something with hope. I am Jeff Gill in this book. I got tired of getting kicked around by the school bully and knew, do or die, I would fight him after school. I figured a bully is really a coward and, that if you stand up to him, you achieve a victory even if you lose the fight. Here is footage from the actual fight on Waialae Golf Course after school way back when.
But this book is far more than a fight. It is about an underdog forging an identity on an extremely competitive campus, the way my fellow alum Barack Obama did all those years ago. PUNAHOU BLUES is about first love, epic struggle, and the dog-eat-dog world of Honolulu teens.
I hope you enjoy reading it.
