Damon Ferrell Marbut about this book: Awake in the Mad World was the end result of a few years of life as a graduate student in the first several years of the early 2000s. Friends of mine and I were noticing the economy changing, and the world along with it, which in turn seemed to bear a heavy weight down on us, who'd individually chosen to pursue our dreams as writing students or philosophy majors until realizing that in so doing, we were facing the difficult challenge of inserting ourselves into an American culture and workforce that didn't seem too terribly interested in people like us, living at the top of our lungs and searching for ways to better explain our drives as creative, passionate thinkers and people.
We came alive together, in meeting through the graduate school for a pair of years, and then drew apart to pursue the different avenues of sustaining ourselves after that initial burst of joy and love and beauty had made us finally feel like we'd found home as a group. It was a gorgeous, difficult, important time in a history we will always share with fondness, never forgetting its necessity and clarity, as long as we all live, no matter the physical distance between us now. Awake in the Mad World tells the story of a similar progression in the lives of similar people.
