Lauri Fernabout this book: A Life Interrupted follows the struggles of fifteen-year-old Sophie as she is uprooted from her perfect life in New York City and forced to start over with her family in a small island town in Florida. Sophie is bitter and lost until she meets a local boy who introduces her to all the wonders and adventure that the Gulf coast of Florida has to offer. She also discovers a passion for helping injured wildlife after she finds a pelican tangled in fishing on the beach.
This story was inspired by my volunteer work with a local wildlife rescue here in Florida called Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education, Inc. (Wildlife Inc. for short) and my love of birds. The idea came to me as I contemplated writing a coming of age young adult story for a contest in 2012. It took me nearly a year to write the book and another year to edit it to a point where I felt comfortable seeing it published. This story is a labor of love and I hope that readers enjoy it as much as I enjoyed writing it.
