David Hockingabout this book: Based on true events, Driven To Sex is a modern-day love story about an idealistic, if not slightly naive young man, who, having never been associated with the sex industry, takes up driving ladies of the night.
In a job which starts out as a rather terrifying and thrilling curiosity for Patrick (Paddo), he soon becomes fully-immersed in the lives, the loves and the day-to-day tribulations of a group of girls who, for a multitude of reasons, have taken up a job which society openly chastises. Very quickly, Paddo realises society is probably very wrong.
The book is part comedy, part erotic fairytale and part criminal thriller, and provides a fascinating insight into the lives of working girls, which are happening all over the world every night. We meet the men they visit, we are exposed to the often truly bizarre requests made of them and we get to drive around with Patrick, who is constantly amazed and enthralled by the stories and personalities he encounters.
His favourite girl, Leena, soon becomes the star of the show and their nights in the car together provide a hilarious and touching insight into the sexual proclivities of the western world. Paddo also soon realises she is one of the cookiest and most wonderful women he has ever met.
Sex and drugs and rock n' roll are part of the ride, but this is not purely erotic fiction. It's a very human, funny story and gives a glimpse of the night world taking place not far from your house, every night.
The book takes place in Perth, Western Australia, although I guarantee all escort agencies all over the world could write their own book. But set on the shores of the blue Indian Ocean, Perth's idyllic beaches and clean city streets proved a stark contrast to the night world which only comes to life after the sun goes down.
There is also a good chance this book might become your social life until you finish it.
As the author, I did indeed drive ladies of the night in Perth, and the stories I heard and the things I witnessed were simply too remarkable not to write about. There is a world out there I never knew of, a world most us have no idea about, I suspect, and I feel privileged to have been a part of it. I certainly won't forget it.
I'd urge you to come for a ride with Paddo where you are, quite literally, granted a safe, comfortable front seat to watch the whole show. And where you learn that truly amazing people are sometimes sitting right next to you.
